Day 1: Arrival at Kigali International Airport
Your adventure begins the moment you land at Kigali International Airport, where you will be warmly welcomed by a representative from Primate Safaris Ltd. Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, is a city of vibrant culture, clean streets, and a rich history. After a brief introduction, you will embark on a scenic drive to Ruhengeri, also known as Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park.
The journey from Kigali to Ruhengeri takes approximately 2-3 hours, offering breathtaking views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, terraced farmlands, and rural villages. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to learn about Rwanda’s history, culture, and conservation efforts, particularly those focused on protecting the endangered mountain gorillas.
Upon arrival in Ruhengeri, you will check into your chosen accommodation, which could be the luxurious
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, the cozy
Kinigi Guest House, the rustic
Rock Camp, or the comfortable
La Palme Hotel. Each of these lodgings offers a unique experience, blending comfort with the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. After settling in, you can relax and prepare for the thrilling days ahead.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
The highlight of your safari begins early on the second day. After a hearty breakfast, you will head to the
Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing. Here, park rangers will provide essential information about gorilla trekking, including safety guidelines, gorilla behavior, and the importance of conservation. You will also be assigned to a gorilla family group based on your fitness level and preferences.
Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that takes you deep into the dense forests of the Virunga Mountains. The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. As you hike through the lush vegetation, you will be accompanied by experienced guides and trackers who will share their knowledge of the forest and its inhabitants.
When you finally encounter the mountain gorillas, the experience is nothing short of magical. You will spend
one hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat, watching them interact, feed, and play. The sheer size and intelligence of the gorillas, combined with their human-like expressions, make this an awe-inspiring encounter. Remember to bring your camera, as this is a moment you will want to cherish forever.
After the trek, you will return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest. In the evening, you can relax and reflect on the day’s adventure while enjoying a delicious dinner. Overnight stay will be at
Gorilla View Lodge,
La Palme Hotel, or
Kinigi Guest House.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Departure
On the final day of your safari, you will embark on another exciting adventure:
golden monkey trekking. These playful and endangered primates are endemic to the Virunga Mountains and are known for their striking golden-orange fur and lively behavior. Like gorilla trekking, the experience begins with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a guided trek into the forest.
Golden monkeys are highly social creatures, often found in large groups. Watching them leap through the trees, groom each other, and forage for food is a delightful experience. The trek is generally less strenuous than gorilla trekking, making it suitable for travelers of all fitness levels. After spending an hour with the golden monkeys, you will return to the park headquarters.
From here, you will begin your journey back to Kigali. The drive offers one last opportunity to soak in the stunning landscapes of Rwanda. Upon arrival in Kigali, you can choose to visit the
Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant and educational site that honors the victims of the 1994 genocide. This visit provides a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history and its remarkable journey toward reconciliation and healing.
Finally, you will be transferred to
Kanombe Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your unforgettable 3-day safari.
